LAURITS TUXEN at SKAGEN MUSEUM THIS SUMMER 2014

Pay a Visit to Skagen Museum this summer 2014:

The famous Danish painter Laurits Tuxen is on exhibition again with several important paintings from private collections. Laurits Tuxen (9 December 1853 – 21 November 1927) was a Danish painter and sculptor specialising in figure painting. He was also associated with the Skagen Painters. He was the first head of Kunstnernes Frie Studieskoler, an art school established in the 1880s to provide an alternative to the education offered by the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. He first visited Skagen in 1870, returning on several occasions. In the 1880s and 1890s, he travelled widely painting portraits for Europe’s royal families including Christian IX of Denmark, Queen Victoria and the Russian royalty. In 1901, after the death of his first wife Ursule de Baisieux from Belgium, he married the Norwegian Frederikke Treschow and shortly afterwards purchased Madam Bendsen’s house in Skagen in the north of Jutland, converting it into a stately summer residence.[2] In 1914 he made a study trip to Greece to paint the entry of George I of Greece into Salonika, for the Christian castle. He made lively and well-characterized portraits, among them his self-portrait in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, and portraits of P. S. Krøyer, in the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest. He also made portraits in sculpture, including a portrait group of Krøyer and Michael Ancher.Tuxen went on to paint a number of landscapes in and around Skagen, but also completed a number of paintings of his family, friends and garden flowers.This painting “Man rejser sig fra bordet” owned by John. E.Oden, New York,is on show. This is a sensation, because works by Laurits Tuxen are not allowed to exportation and must stay in Denmark. The American owner has got a permission specially to keep the painting, bought at an auction from a person, who illegaly had sent the painting out of Denmark for auction sale.

Another famous woman in Skagen

Born in Denmark, daughter of Wilhelm August E.M. Triepcke (1834-91) engineer, director, and Minna Augusta Kindler (1840-1909).
The Family originated from Germany. Marie was a beauty with a lot of friends, painters and writers and she was educated as a painter in Copenhagen. She wanted to start a scool of painting, but went to Paris in 1888 with Anna Ancher for further education. During her visit to Paris she met P.S. Krøyer, famous painter,  and they got married in 1889.

Marie Triepcke had her first exhibition on Charlottenborg, Copenhagen in 1888.
She was a skilled painter and knew af lot of welknown painters.

Marie and her husband P.S. Krøyer travelled a lot in Germany, Italy and France before the settled down in Skagen. Her husband had some problems with his health and Marie almost stopped her own painting. 1895 she gave birth to a daughter, Vibeke.
Unfortunately, her husband became serious ill and he was frequenty hospitalized.

Hugo Alfvén
Swedish Composer

In 1902 Marie met the Swedish composer Hugo Alfvén, a very charming person, and she left her husband, but P.S. Krøyer did not agree to a divorce until 1905, when Marie was pregnant with her second daughter, Margita. There was a scandal and Marie did not marry Alfvén before 1912 after the death of P.S. Krøyer.

The Alfvén family lived in Sweden and Marie designed the furniture and the interior decorations with a great succes. At this period she painted some oils and pastels, but few are left for us to see to day.

Her second marriage was not happy and Alfvén wanted a divorce, but Marie did not agree and the divorce was not until 1936.

Her career as a painter was not as great as deserved. P.S. Krøyer and Hugo Alvén were both famous and masterful. To day only a few of her works are left for us to see. 

Marie lived a lonely life in Stockholm, capital of Sweden, until her death in 1940.

In 2012 Bille August made the famous film about the life of Marie Krøyer and the other artists living in Skagen during the golden summerdays. The film is an absolutely MUST if you love the wonderful paintings from Skagen.

Laurits Tuxen (1853-1927) 

Welknown in Europe, established painter of the royalty in Denmark, England and Russia, Laurits Tuxen took part in the happy days in Skagen. Here he took over a splendid house, where he joined his friends every summer.

Lauritz Tuxen was born in Copenhagen in a rather well off family, frequented the Academy with Kröyer, the famous artist closely connected to Skagen. 

Both of them travelled a lot and studied in Paris and soon Tuxen became a welknown painter of the European royalty. Remember: King Christian 9. of Denmark and his wife, Queen Louise was in fact the parents of Queen Alexandra of England, The Zarina of Russia, a son was to become King of Greece and  a daughter married to a German Prince. 

Lauritz Tuxen married 1. Ursule de Baisieux, died 1899. They had 2 daughters.
2. Frederikke Treschow, from a welknown old Norwegian family. No children.

Lauritz Tuxen took part in the local life in Skagen and took a special interest in establishing the museum. He enjoyed his stay with his family and the famous artists parties in Skagen, so often the theme in  the beautiful paintings from this period.

In Skagen he painted some charming paintings of his family, friends and flowers in his garden. A great contrast to his stately paintings of the royalty.

Personally, I find most of them full of life and interesting, because he seemed to concentrate on showing the real person behind the title.

Michael Peter Ancher was a Danish impressionist artist. 

He is most associated with his paintings of fishermen and other scenes from the Danish port of Skagen. His paintings are classics and he is probably one of Denmark's most popular artists. 

Born: June 9, 1849, Bornholm

Died: September 19, 1927, Skagen

Period: Impressionism

Michael Peter Ancher was born on the island of Bornholm. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Art (Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi) in Copenhagen (1871-5)

A group of artists had congregated to form the Skagen Painters in Skagen, a small fishing village in the north of Denmark, situated where the Baltic and North Sea converge.

After Ancher first visited Skagen in 1874, he settled there joining the growing society of artists. The colony of painters regularly met in the Brøndums Hotel in Skagen in order to exchange ideas. 

In 1880 Ancher married fellow painter and Skagen native Anna Brøndum, whose father owned the Brøndums Hotel.

In the first years of their marriage, the couple had a home and studio in the "Garden House", which is now in Skagen Museum garden. After the birth of his daughter Helga in 1883 the family moved to Markvejen in Skagen.

 I would like to tell you about one of my favorites:

Anna Kirstine Brøndum was born in Skagen, Denmark, the daughter of Erik Andersen Brøndum (1820–1890) and Ane Hedvig Møller (1826-1916). She was the only one of the Skagen Painters who was actually born and grew up in Skagen where her father owned the Brøndums Hotel. The artistic talent of Anna Ancher became obvious at an early age and she grew acquainted with pictorial art via the many artists who settled to paint in Skagen, in north of Jutland. 

Here are some of her paintings: 

(In my opinion, she is even just as talented as her famous husband, the painter Michael Ancher, who actually got all the spotlight.)

While she studied drawing for three years at the Vilhelm Kyhn College of Painting in Copenhagen, she developed her own style and was a pioneer in observing the interplay of different colours in natural light. She also studied drawing in Paris at the atelier of Pierre Puvis de Chavannes along with Marie Triepcke, who would marry Peder Severin Krøyer, another Skagen painter. In 1880 she married fellow painter Michael Ancher, whom she met in Skagen. They had one daughter, Helga Ancher. Despite pressure from society that married women should devote themselves to household duties, she continued painting after marriage.

Anna Ancher is considered to be one of the great Danish pictorial artists by virtue of her abilities as a character painter and colourist. Her art found its expression in Nordic art's modern breakthrough towards a more truthful depiction of reality, e.g. in Blue Ane (1882) and The Girl in the Kitchen (1883–1886). See below.

Ancher preferred to paint interiors and simple themes from the everyday lives of the Skagen people, especially fishermen, women and children. She was intensely preoccupied with exploring light and colour, as in Interior with Clematis (1913). She also created more complex compositions such as A Funeral (1891). Anna Ancher's works have often represented Danish art abroad. She was awarded the Ingenio et Arti medal in 1913[4] and the Tagea Brandt Rejselegat in 1924.

Look at the way, she was catching the very special light in Skagen at the north of Denmark.

Michael & Anna Ancher's House in Skagen:

The Skagen residence of Anne and Michael Ancher was purchased in 1884. In 1913, a large studio annex was added to the property and this also forms part of what is on display today. 

Upon her death in 1964, the Anchers' daughter, Helga, left the house and all of its contents to a foundation. The former residence was restored and opened as a museum and visitor attraction.

In 1967, Michael and Anna Ancher's house was turned into a museum by the Helga Ancher Foundation. Michael and Anna Ancher's house (Anchers Hus) in Skagen has been converted to a museum and is open to the public for tours. Original furniture and paintings created by the Anchers and other Skagen artists are shown in the restored home and studio. Art exhibitions are arranged in the Saxild House (Saxilds Gaard), another building on the property. This house is filled with displays of paintings by Michael and Anna Ancher as well as those from many other Skagen painters who made up their circle of friends.

Anna Ancher was born in 1859 in Skagen, the daughter of Ane and Erik Brøndum, the owners of Brøndum's Hotel. She was a young girl when the painters began arriving in Skagen, she studied them and began sketching and painting herself.  Her career was unique. At that time it was not an ordinary thing for women to have an artistic education - and they did not have access to the art academy in Copenhagen. She was admitted on a private painting school for women in Copenhagen (Vilhelm Kyhn's school), where she followed the teaching for three winter seasons 1875-78. She later studied in Paris. Vilhelm Kyhn was of the opinion that Anna Ancher had to give up her paint box, when she got married - he meant she had to devote herself to the household duties. He sent a wedding gift of six pair of cups and saucers and demanded that "now his little Anna had to walk down to the beach with her paint box  and all her materials and let them sail, for now she was a married woman who had to forget the art and only think about the domesticity. - Anna had to understand this!"

And just look at this masterpiece of the old woman! 

Luckily for us, Anna Ancher did still find time for painting.

Anna Ancher was married to the Skagen-painter Michael Ancher in 1880. They had a daughter Helga in 1883 and lived together in Skagen for the rest of their lives. In 1884 they resided in the house in Skagen which since 1967 is established as a museum "Michael and Anna Anchers house".

Anna Ancher is known as a painter of light and sunshine, as an impressionistic inspired colourist. To her it was first of all colours and light. She experienced a wide recognition from Scandinavian and international exhibitions and obtained several honors.

I hope, you enjoyed this little story about one of the famous Skagen-painters. Later, I will be writing about her husband, Michael Ancher and some other important artists from this time. 

I strongly recommend a visit to Skagen, because it is a charming place for tourists. There are some fantastic beaches, lovely houses, good sea-food and about all:
